Feel the History
Macon’s Manufacturing Boom
Macon was founded in 1823 on the banks of the Ocmulgee River and named after the revered U.S. senator Nathaniel Macon. With its proximity to the navigable river and rich farmland, Macon was a natural hub for trade in the region. The city’s fortunes were tied to the cotton industry up until WWII, when preparations for the war brought Robins Air Force Base to the area, setting the stage for a more diversified economy.
The Broadway Lofts building was built in 1916 for the Happ Brothers, who started manufacturing clothing there, a natural industry for a town rooted in cotton trading. Between 1940 and 1949, the town, and presumably the Happ Brothers Company, experienced a manufacturing boom, with industrial employment soaring from 6,500 to 16,000. The Happ Brothers Company continued to sew and distribute overalls and other garments until the late 1980s. Today, the stately brick factory stands as a testament to the industrious creativity of the Happ Brothers and Macon, Georgia.
